I found this copy in the summer of 1988. When I visited the "Spaced Out Library" (now the "Merril Collection") one day there was a 'discarded books' bin outside the building's entrance. Almost immediately the book's spine caught my eye. Knowing this was a fairly rare Verne title, I grabbed it and dug in soon after. Great stuff.
Czech filmmaker Karel Zeman based his marvelous 1958 film Vynález zkázy (released over here as The Fabulous World of Jules Verne) primarily on this book; when I read it, the imagery was already set for me.
