After seeing the shit show that was the prequels, he lost his enthusiasm for making movies in general. There was a lot of abuse heaped on him and like David Lean, he decided to bow out. At least Lean came back with A Passage To India. Lucas produced Red Tails. 'Nuff said.
Red Tails is terrible, I think....what I saw of it. I stopped the DVD about 30 minutes in. While the story itself is vital, the filmmaking is sloppy and CG cheap. This aviation fan also felt that the filmmakers and FX guys hadn't bothered to look (YouTube) to see how fighters and bombers twist and turn in the sky, and how B-17s, in particular, fly in formation -- they did not pack together like race cars in the final stretch! Unbelievable.
