I'm starting to dig in and notice it's quite the document. By the way, my favourite period in cinema is "German Expressionism", which includes Post-expressionism. Many films from the latter, while containing some or many expressionistic touches, are not expressionist in the strictest sense. Metropolis (1927) would fall into this category.
There are more "Big Ideas Simply Explained" books from the same publisher: "Classical music", "Art", "Architecture", "Literature", "History", and so on, are actually of much more interest to me, but I thought I would start small....
