Whenever I've designed a costume I would make a trip down to Designer Fabrics on Queen Street West. It's a warehouse.
With plans in hand I'd spend some time looking at bolts of material and trying to imagine what they would look like under the movie lights. Being a bit of a shooter (cameraman) I could give a reasonable best guess and grab the fabric that would do the trick.
This morning during my online newspaper reading I came across a Toronto Star story which brought out those special memories:
After 64 years, Toronto fashion industry staple Designer Fabrics is sewing it up
Photographs below: One, or two, of my master creations utilizing fabrics drawn from Designer Fabrics. (While I designed the costumes, a talented seamstress by the name of Mandy Armstrong built them.)
