Terrible show. When I was a kid I liked Lost in Space, but when I saw it again as a teen I learned the meaning of: "It was great when I was a kid."
"Irwin Allen's Lost in Space Volume One", by Marc Cushman, is a fine document of the show's first year, the best year, although one could see the seeds of its own demise. Due to the low budget the castaways were "Gilligan's Islanded" on one planet for the entire year — "Smith's Planet". Cushman had access to the show's "files", which makes for a fun and informative read.
